Do you want to follow people you know, or people with similar interests, or get into a community and follow people whose personality you like in the community? There are friending memes where people introduce themselves, and artists and authors to follow, like Ursula Vernon and several webcomic creators. Tell me where you would like to start, and I will try to help you integrate.
If you go to the sidebar on the profile page on desktop, most everything is laid out pretty well. The FAQ page is searchable, which is so much more helpful than LJ. If you want to put, for instance, Japanese fashion into the search bar or into your interests and then click on the link it turns into on your profile, then that will take you to a page that lists people and communities that you can check out.
It takes a long time to decide on stuff like this if you don't go in with a plan. You can ask around and see if people you know and like have journals that you can follow. You can put stuff into the RSS feed, like I did with your other blog. I am considering following some knitting blogs that do free patterns and stuff, currently.
